01. A wide channel with S0 = 0.0025 carries a discharge of 3 m2 /s. Compute the normal depth and velocity using the Manning formula when n = 0.020

02. Design an irrigation channel in alluvial soil from following data using Lacey’s theory: Discharge = 15.0 cumec; Lacey’s silt factor = 1.0; Side slope = ½ : 1

Solution:

V = 0.4382 (Q . f²)^1/6

    = 0.4382 x (15 x 1)^1/6
     = 0.689 m/s

A = Q/V
    = 15/0.689
    = 21.76 sq.m

Wetted perimeter P using Lacey’s regime perimeter equation
P = 4.75 Q^1/2
   = 4.75 x 15^1/2
   = 18.39 m

03. Calculate the amount of bleaching powder needed to disinfectant 1000000 Litter water in a storage tank to a dose of 5ppm chlorine. Bleaching powder contains 25% of chlorine.

Solution:
Volume = 1000000 L

Total chlorine = 0.5 mg/L x 1000000 L    [ppm=mg/L]
                        = 500000 mg

                        = 0.5 kg

Bleaching powder needed = 0.5/0.25
                                           = 2kg

Solution:

True difference  h = [(a1 – b1)+(a2 – b2)]/2

                             = [(3.2 – 2.5) + (2.3 – 1.9)]/2

                             = 0.55
So, True RL of B = 210+0.55 =210.55m

06. Define BOD & COD. Which value is greater and why?

Solution:

Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)

BOD is defined as the amount of oxygen demanded by the micro-organisms in the sewage for the decomposition of bio-degradable matter under aerobic condition.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
The amount of oxygen that is required for the chemical oxidation of the organic and inorganic chemicals present in the wastewater by utilizing oxidizing agents like Potassium permanganate, Potassium dichromate etc. is called as chemical oxygen demand (COD).

COD is greater than BOD and Why?

Only the biodegradable organics is measured in BOD test when, COD test measures biodegradable organic material & inorganic or non- biodegradable material also.

Hence value of COD is more than BOD.
